Getting camera parts remade
Battery and card doors, port covers, hot-shoe caps, lens caps, grips and adapters for digital and film cameras. Optics and electronics stay with camera repairers.

Cameras last for years, and film cameras for decades, but the small plastic doors and covers break or get lost. Manufacturers stop supplying them for older models long before the camera stops working.
A maker can remake many external parts from the camera itself: the opening a door closes over, the hinge pin it turns on and the catch it clips into are all there to measure.
Parts makers commonly remake
- Battery and memory-card doors
- Rubber-like port covers (in TPU)
- Hot-shoe covers and flash-foot adapters
- Lens caps, rear caps and body caps
- Hand grips and grip extensions
- Film-camera rewind cranks and knobs (non-mechanical caps)
- Tripod-plate adapters and cable-release holders
Materials and processes
Resin
Small, precise doors and caps with fine detail.
PETG or nylon
Hinged doors and catches that flex.
TPU
Port covers and grip pads.
Machined aluminium
Tripod adapters and plates that must be stiff.
Don't have these remade
- Lens elements, optical mounts that must hold precise alignment
- Battery packs and chargers
- Flash units' high-voltage parts
- Tripod parts that hold heavy camera and lens combinations overhead
Buy certified originals for these and have them fitted by a qualified person. The safety page explains why.
Try these first
- Ask an authorised service centre whether the part is still available.
- Look for parts cameras (non-working bodies) of the same model.
- Check camera forums for existing files.
If nobody sells the part at a sensible price, a maker is the next step.
Good to know
Send the camera body measurements for the opening, the hinge pin diameter and the catch position; photos straight down into the opening with a ruler help most.
What to put in your post
- Make and model of camera or lens.
- Measurements of the opening, hinge pin and catch.
- Whether the part needs to be weather-sealed (ask the maker; seals are hard to copy).
- Photos from every side with a ruler in shot, and the measurements that matter. The measuring guide shows how.
Step by step: find the model number, measure the part and photograph it for a quote.
