Replacement part brief builder
Makers quote faster and more accurately when the brief is complete. Pick the product and the part, enter the main measurements in millimetres, and copy the title and description into your post on The Spool List.
Measure with calipers if you can. The guide to measuring and photographing a part on this site shows what to measure.
How to use this calculator
- Pick the product and the part. This sets the wording of the title, so makers can see at a glance what they are quoting on.
- Measure the overall size in millimetres. Length, width and height of the part, or of the gap it fills. Calipers are best; a steel ruler will do for a first quote.
- Count the holes or pins that have to line up. Put their diameters and spacing in your photos or in the post.
- Set the conditions and the material. Heat, sunlight, water and wear decide the material. If you are not sure, leave it to the maker.
- Copy, then post. Copy the title and description, add your make and model number and photos, and post the job on The Spool List.

Questions about this calculator
Why millimetres?
Most makers model in millimetres, and caliper readings in millimetres avoid rounding errors on small parts. If you only have inches, say so in the post.
Do I need a 3D file?
No. Photos with a ruler in shot, measurements and the model number are enough for a maker to quote. A file or drawing speeds things up and can lower the price, because modelling is often the largest part of the bill for a one-off.
Should I order a spare?
If the part broke from wear or a weak design, a second copy usually costs little extra once the model exists. Put the quantity you want in the brief.
